Buyer Beware: Know Who You're Actually Flying With

In a situation like that, those customers aren't guaranteed anything back — they're just another line item on a creditor list.

There are plenty of well-run, financially sound companies in that space, and several of them are valued clients of ours — we fly charters on their behalf regularly. The issue isn't the business model. It's understanding exactly what you're buying, and who's actually on the hook to get you off the ground.

• Who actually operates the aircraft — and do they hold their own Part 135 certificate?
• Is my deposit tied to a specific flight, or is it a balance in a larger pool?
• If the company I'm paying stops flying tomorrow, what happens to my money?
